How to get started in modeling.
Success doesn't happen overnight, it will take time. Whether you are looking at modelling full time or only looking to model part time, starting a career in modeling is just like starting your own business, you need to recognize that to succeed you will need to make a few investments, in yourself and in your portfolio.
Ideally, your portfolio should contain shots from at least three different photographers and only include your best shots. Working with different photographers is a great way of bring out your own unique character and style, as each photographer sees you differently. Having variety in your portfolio will also portray your versatility.
Initially, 'Test for Prints' (TFP) is an excellent way of building your portfolio whilst allowing you to gain valuable experience in front of the camera. TFP's helps the photographer build their skills and hone their techniques and provides you the opportunity to put together a great looking and varied portfolio.
TFP's can also save you the initial outlay of hundreds of dollars for professional photographs. If you work regularly you will find your portfolio will build up over time and you may never need to outlay for that expensive photo session.
Next you will need to find yourself a professional agent or agency. With an emphasis on 'Professional'. It is important that you spend the time researching your local modeling agencies and determining, to the best of your ability, the available opportunities in your areas.
Read books and magazines with articles on modeling, speak to modeling industry associations, contact local advertising agencies and photographers, contact the fashion editor of your local newspapers, you could even try the marketing departments of large department stores. All these people will know, or should have a good idea of how much modeling work is available locally.
Make appointments and arrange interviews with all the known model agencies in your area. It is important that you feel comfortable with the agency you choose as you will be dealing with them on a regular basis. It will, in effect, be your business partner!
Before committing to any agency, research the companies the agency claims to do a lot of work for. Generally the companies marketing and promotions departments will be able to assist you with this information.
Beware of agencies that pressure you into parting with a lot of money. A successful agency earns its income from booking models into legitimate modeling jobs. Agencies that depend on income from listing fees and modeling courses will spend more time seeking and signing up new talent than they will finding modeling jobs for you. Remember success doesn't happen overnight, it will take time. Building your modeling career takes a lot of patience, dedication and discipline. You need to keep yourself in A1 condition both physically and mentally. Work out regularly, eat healthy, get plenty of sleep, and fresh air is a definite must.
